Program

For adults...

I mostly come on stage in my Ōṭṭan Thuḷḷal costume, sometimes also in my Parayan Thuḷḷal costume and perform for between twenty minutes and one and a half hours. I will perform either an excerpt or the whole story in German, and, if so desired, also combined with a sequence from one of the original texts in Malayāḷam. Depending on the duration of the performance and on individual agreement, additional demonstrations (of facial expressions, rhythms, etc) and explanations can be provided.

With adequate preparation longer sequences of up to half an hour can be performed in Malayāḷam for Indian cultural associations / universities.

Technical requirements: amplifiers, mixing console, loudspeakers, headset, monitors, access for a minidisc player (sound system and headset can be provided if necessary)

Stage: area of at least three by four metres; no special stage necessary; except for lawn, sand, gravel or cobblestone surfaces anything can be suitable for dancing on.

Light: simple white lighting is sufficient for larger stages.

Thuḷḷal programmes are especially effective in smaller venues and develop a high intensity when performed in close proximity to the audience. In these circumstances the microphone and artificial light can be left away.

For children...

I come on stage in the Ōṭṭan Thuḷḷal costume with lengths of performances ranging between 15 minutes and one hour. The process of applying my makeup and getting myself dressed into the costume - which takes about an hour - thereby "transforming" myself into an Indian dancer, can also be part of the occasion and something made visible to and experienced by everyone.

After the ritual of "paying respect to the ground" and some explanations about the makeup and costume I mostly perform the often quite humorous presentation of the "nine different gestures" (Navarasa). During "Bhima meets Hanuman" (Kalyāṇasaugandhikam) I will ask some children to come onto the stage and support me in this freely improvised story. Participation exercises on rhythm, dance and facial expression round off this part of the performance. At the end I will then perform a humorous, critical or philosophical excerpt from one of my German Thuḷḷal stories (details upon consultation and by agreement).

Technical requirements: small scale venues - portable sound system with access for a minidisc player. Large scale venue - amplifiers, mixing console, loudspeakers, headset, access for a minidisc player (all items can be provided if necessary)

Stage: area of at least three by four metres; no special stage necessary; except for lawn, sand, gravel or cobblestone surfaces anything is suitable for dancing on.

Light: simple white lighting is sufficient for larger stages.
